About Us
The Office of Sustainability (OoS) at Mason was created in August 2007 with the hiring of the first Sustainability Coordinator. Now, the office has grown to a manager and 3 full-time staff, and a wonderful cadre of several student interns.
Our Mission:
The mission of the sustainability office is to use the strengths of George Mason University - innovation, responsiveness, flexibility, and community strength - to provide leadership in environmental, social, and economic stewardship on our campuses and throughout the local and global communities of which we are a part.
We are often asked “what do you do?” or “tell me what a typical day is like in your office.” The second question is nearly impossible to answer – there is no such thing as “typical” in our office! What we do, however, includes a great deal of education, facilitation, and innovation around making sure Mason becomes a sustainable institution. We work with all departments, many student organizations, and the administration to set policy, implement programming, and proffer general guidance on how to reduce consumption and improve efficiencies in all areas. We work with many local and regional consortia on solving regional sustainability issues and sharing best practices.
The OoS resides within the Facilities organization. We work very closely with the Facilities Administration offices and Facilities Management offices. We work on joint initiatives with many facilities offices, including the Mason Energy Office, the Waste Management and Recycling Office, and the Grounds office. We also work closely with Auxiliary Enterprises.
We invite all Mason community members as well as our regional communities to get in touch with us to find out how to get green and sustainable!
