Mason’s celebration of Earth Week in 2009 features may opportunities to learn about environmental sustainability as well as Mason’s commitment to leadership in environmental research and action.

Thursday 16 April
Economics without Ecocide, featuring Drs. Peter G. Brown, Robert Nadeau, Peter Balint, and Susie Crate

The panel will explore the idea of rebuilding our world economy from a cross-disciplinary perspective in line with ecology, ethics, social justice and equity, and economics with respect to perceptions of humanity's place on Earth. Dr. Brown will be available to sign books at 1:30 pm after the panel discussion. Dr. Brown is a professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and teaches in the Departments of Geology, Environment, and Natural Resource Sciences. His books include Restoring the Public Trust: A Fresh Vision for Progressive Government in America; Ethics, The Commonwealth of Life: Economics For a Flourishing Earth. |

BioTour Veggie-oil Bus Display
Mason Traffic Circle, near the Mason statue, 10:15-4:30 p.m.
Come see the biodiesel bus, a converted school bus that runs on waste vegetable oil. You’ll get to see how it works by climbing aboard and taking a look under the hood.
BioTour- Living Sustainably Presentation

Come learn about, BioTour, an educational non-profit of 13 young people that traverses the country on two awesome school buses that have been converted to run on waste vegetable oil (WVO) and solar paneled electrical power. They will address the vital issues of climate change, environmental degradation, and peak oil while presenting pathways toward sustainability in renewable energy, the potential in green jobs, and perhaps most importantly, advocating for a more active and participatory democracy; a truly educated electorate. |

The Coal River Mountain Wind Project is being led by concerned citizens residing in Coal River Valley of West Virginia where community groups have been fighting the devastating effects of surface mining in Coal River Valley for many years. For the first time, we have an economic alternative to these destructive mining practices. We welcome you join us to learn more about this historic struggle for cleaner, more sustainable future and how you can help. |
AgriArt

AgriART brings together an array of art works that critically engage with cultures of food production and consumption. The exhibition features projects that represent where we are and what we can do to (re)create sustainable relationships with our sources of nourishment and the communities in which we live. Learn how to make non-toxic cleaning materials with basic ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. Cheap, easy, and environmentally friendly!
Easy Veg*n Cooking
2:00-3:30pm
Learn some basics about vegan cooking, witness us demo some easy recipes, and try some tasty samples!
All these events take place in SUB II, rooms 3 and 4.
Coke Recycling Trailer
Johnson Center Plaza, 12:00-4:00 p.m.
Come learn about recycling and get free soda from Coca-Cola.
Environmental Justice Panel, featuring Irv Sheffey, Kari Fulton, and others
Student Union Building II Ballroom, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
This event will present environmental justice from the perspective of the metropolitan Washington area. Our guests have years of experience as EJ organizers and will share their experiences working with low-income and communities of color.
Wednesday 22 April
Campus Clean-up
Meet at the Johnson Center Plaza, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Join Mason’s Environmental Awareness Group as they conduct a campus clean-up. Teams will be leaving from the JC Plaza starting at 11:00am and spreading out across campus to pick up as much trash as possible. Snacks will be provided for volunteers.

Visit the Farmers' Market for locally grown products! Help support our local community and learn about how buying local can help the environment.
Goats for the Bulondo Goat Project

In October 2008 George Mason University's Women & Gender Studies Program began a partnership with the Women’s Center for Job Creation (WCFJC), an NGO based in Minnesota and Uganda, to empower low-income Women in Uganda. The two organizations started collecting donations for the Bulondo Goat Project. This project gives goats to individual women in Uganda, providing them with sustenance for their families and the ability to develop small businesses. The goats at Mason’s Earth Day Celebration are a vehicle to make the global local. Having the goats also provides an opportunity to educate Mason faculty and staff, students and the Fairfax community on both violence and its aftermath in Africa and on the fundraising project. |

Bike to Mason Day!
Featuring Oasis Bike Works, Bikes at Vienna, GMU Bikes, JC Plaza, 6:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

We'll have a Pit Stop for those biking in from 6:00 until 10:00, with breakfast (muffins, pastries, fruit, coffee, water) provided. We'll have free Bike to Mason T-shirts, GMU Go Green water bottles, and more. From 11 to 1:00 we'll make announcements and award prizes to riders who have pre-registered (you need not be present to win). In the afternoon, we'll have power bars and drinks for the return home. Botanical Tours of Campus, 12-1 pm, Meeting in Krug Hall 15

Are you curious about the plants that grow on Mason’s campus? Join Environmental Science Professor Andrea Weeks for a botanical walking tour of campus. Meet at 12:05 pm at 15 Krug Hall for a 45-50 minute walk. Be prepared to walk over muddy ground. Tours limited to 20 people. Repeats on 4/29 from 5.30-6.30 pm.
