Sustainability Living Learning Community (LLC)

Faculty Liaison Andrew Wingfield at

The Environment and Sustainability LLC is an on campus residential community housed on Piedmont 2nd for students united by their vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable future for our planet. Students on the hall come from all majors, class years, and walks of life.

On the hall : As a group that lives together, Environment and Sustainability LLC members have a unique opportunity to support one another in green living efforts. Students on the hall use a worm composting bin, conserve energy, cook together, and enjoy the company of good neighbors.

In the classroom : Faculty member Professor Andrew Wingfield leads students through peer to peer teaching in a discussion based class. The class gives students the opportunity to visit sustainable sites on campus including the Potomac Heights Vegetable garden, the campus bee apiaries, and more. LLC students also split into  teams designing sustainability projects, many of which are realized with Patriot Green Fund support. Past projects have included implementing e-waste recycling efforts on campus, creating the Piedmont rain garden, and designing student lead green living workshops, and planning Earth Week events.

Around the region : LLC students also engage in many off campus service adventures to become aware of what sustainability in action looks like. Annual trips have included dune fence restoration at Assateague Island Park, trips to volunteer at sustainable farms in the area, and an overnight stay at Environmental Studies on the Piedmont to learn about and participate in conservation efforts.
