University Sustainability provides George Mason University students with a variety of project opportunities in support of their academic requirements for courses. We collaborate with Mason faculty to ensure students can apply their academic knowledge to advance Mason’s operational sustainability.

Mason courses often require students to complete a specific number of direct service hours on impactful projects. These hours are often called “service-learning,” “direct service,” “community service,” or “project service.”

In addition to project opportunities, we offer weekly in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities via our Sustainable Sign-Ups Volunteer Portal. Students can create a free account with their Mason email address, browse the live calendar, and sign up for as many opportunities as they wish – each one counts!

Every project University Sustainability offers is eligible for students to earn the number of hours they need for their academic requirements.

Student Projects and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

Mason is a member of the United Nations Global Compact, the the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. It is also a member of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an organization launched by the United Nations promoting the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We connect each of our project opportunities to the relevant SDGs. Students who work on our projects accelerate University Sustainability’s efforts to make Mason even more sustainable while furthering the institution’s commitment to promote and advance the UN’s SDGs.
