Earth Month & Year in Review
At the beginning of each year, the Office of Sustainability starts planning for Earth Month! During the month of April, over 20 sustainability related events happen across Mason’s campuses. We have events that range from gardening hours, to panel discussions, to bike and carpool events, to film screenings, to events that promote mindfulness practices, and much more!
Here are some of our highlights from Spring 2019:
Collaborating for Change: Our Earth Month Partners at Mason
Not only are Mason students our number one focus for awareness building and delivering programs and events, they are also great partners for Earth Month events! Here are few student led Earth Week/ Month events that showed Mason students are at the forefront of sustainability and are committed to delivering transformative events and programs.
- Greening Mason Events
- Reducing Bird Collisions at Mason
- Kick the Straw & Awareness about Single-Use Plastics
- When the Ice Melts: Climate Change Film Screening
Mason Dining is one of our biggest partners for greening Mason. Along with composting initiatives and a push for more sustainable/ reusable serverware like going strawless, we also partner throughout the year at events. During Earth Week 2019, we partnered with them at our annual EcoFest & LLC Block Party, for Sustainable Foods Day, Strawless Party, and a chef led vegan baking clas

Another great partner, Mason LLCs is our cohost for the EcoFest & LLC Block Party. Besides general sustainability awareness and an eco-market, at this event, students from the Environment & Sustainability LLC shared their class projects on poster boards with attendees. Projects included ways to green our residential space on campus, snake conservation, strawless campaigns, and research on bird collisions at Mason. Throughout the year, other trips and collaborations include the Resilience Retreat and sustainable farm visit, The EDGE, sustainable Halloween (highlighting fair trade and eco-alternatives for candy), nature awareness trips to Great Falls and Shenandoah Parks, as well as site visits and experiential learning in the Presidents Park Greenhouse, Innovation Food Forest, Potomac Heights Vegetable Garden, and the Piedmont Rain Garden. Here are a few snapshots from 2018-2019:
One of our closest partners, Mason Transportation has been a driver for change to meet our climate neutrality goals. The Transportation Office held several events this April to further their efforts to reduce single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs) on campus, and promote car/vanpooling, biking, shuttles/ CUE buses.
As a part of Mason Facilities, and with close ties to Mason Recycles and Mason Housing Operations/ Housekeeping we want to take time to thank all the Mason staffers helping behind the scenes to make Earth Month (and our entire year) special and impactful! This was especially true for Earth Month’s Campus Clean Up and the end of year Patriot Packout where we recovered over 13,000 lbs from move out items.
Other past Earth Month activities include:
- Stream Clean-ups
- Climate Change Dialogues
- Farmers Panel
- Film Screenings
- Food Symposium
- Gardening Parties
- Green Engineering & Technology Showcase
- Lightning Talks on Environmental Issues
- Poster Presentations
- Yoga in the Garden
