Meet the Team

The University Sustainability office accelerates action in policy and practice. We collaborate with campus and community partners to improve and implement best practices, and with institutional peers to develop innovative solutions to grand challenges. We provide students, faculty, and staff with unique, on-campus experiential learning opportunities and funding to transform their careers and our campuses.

Thaw Zin Htwe

Green Campus & Residence Team Lead

Biographical Info

Thaw Zin is a graduate student at Mason majoring in Data Analytics Engineering with proficient knowledge in statistics, mathematics, and analytics. She loves to work with sustainability data and tell data-based stories by assisting Mason’s Office of Sustainability with research, conducting cost-benefit analyses and collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data. By using data, she interprets and analyzes information to uncover new insights that drive continuous improvement in the operation of the Office of Sustainability and the Mason campus.

Support student PGF grants and pursue other grants to test and implement best practice and infrastructure

Support relevant capstone and other relevant projects

Lead waste audits to test and advise on waste diversion improvement strategies

Lead and support task forces and strategic planning toward creating a leading model for change. Received the Virginia Governor's Excellence Award-Gold in 2022 for leading campus plastics reduction and elimination efforts

Lead and partner on Earth Month and other campus engagements

Partner with Mason Dining/others on food waste prevention, rescue, and composting

Supporting research sites with sustainability expertise (e.g., Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory)

Advise on and advocate for renewables, including for our solar greenhouse
